Baiyappanahalli train station and masterplan has been designed to resonate the “Garden City” concept and echoes the vibrant and contemporary nature of Bangalore in the design proposal.

The essence of the city of Bangalore lies in the Greenery, as it is better known as the Garden City of India. But this green cover is fast depleting owing to the fast urbanization of the city.  Bangalore has seen a green cover reduction from 68.2% in 1973 to 6.46% in 2017.

The project looks at instigating the revival of the garden city of India, by resonating this as the central design philosophy and creating an icon, which symbolizes what was once the identity of the city. The station has been envisaged as a green landscape, floating above the train platforms. The terrace of the station is landscaped and also a breakout space for the visitors, people working in the station, office workers and hotel guests. It is critical to promote green living to have a healthy lifestyle for people. This “urban green roof” becomes a landmark building with a strong urban presence.

At masterplan level the garden city concept has been implemented. Green buffer has been provided between the site boundary and the city and also between the built zone and the train tracks. These green belts are proposed for pedestrian friendly movement along with bicycle tracks to ensure no overlap with the vehicular traffic.  The skyline responds to the station building and dips down to create a visual response and mark the directionality of the station. This movement trajectory clearly defines the station at the centre of the plot with easy access at the urban scale.

The station building along with the immediate area around the station has been designed as the station complex. The station building itself is sitting partially above the tracks along with two elliptical office buildings grafted above the station building, exploiting the FSI of the air rights. Next to the station is a bus terminal and shopping mall on the other side giving a balance of movement and activity. The two elliptical buildings sitting on the ground, connected to station plaza house a hotel and an office building respectively.

A clear segregation with separate entrances for arrival and departure has been designed. The building cantilever and shape creates a welcoming gesture for passengers.

The station building design creates a visual porosity and an abundant light condition, ensuring maximum use of daylight and promoting wind flow on the platform area. The open green courtyards are green gardens with natural ventilation just to be enjoyed. There are certain moments in the design whereby the concourse, the upper concourse level, roof top garden, elliptical buildings on the roof and the platforms are all visible from the same place. This multi layered space helps passengers in orienting and easy movement.
