Mega Mall
Megamall, a shopping mall, is located in Adheri West, Mumbai, had lost it appeal due to rising real estate prices. With a re-evaluated the programme, the client brief was a contemporary redesign the mall facade and landscape for its relaunch.
In an attempt to invigorate the identity of the mall and install a sense of contextuality,
the forms and patterns, inherent to the western waters abutting Mumbai city are translated into a system of modular facade components. Thus, the design emerges as a static embodiment of peaks and troughs of the dynamic waters.
The triangular built form created an urban corner with two diverging faces, one towards the street and the other towards the plaza. This was intended to be the defining moment of the overall experience and is used as the primary design driver.
The FRP components adhere to a grading towards the urban corner, thus accentuating the perspective from the corner. Programmatically, the mall comprised 4 floors of shops with 3 office floors atop. The FRP components follow a secondary gradient with respect to the vertical program distribution by opening up on the upper office levels. The modules, by virtue of their form, allow for solar shading by creating a mutually shaded system.
The facade pattern is reflected on the urban entrance plaza. Some components on the plaza floor emerge as green zones, with benches and shading trees. All of the existing on ground parking is proposed to be shifted underground.
Thus, the design scheme proposes a system that is contextual, performative as well as one that stands out from the urban fabric.
